What Venice lost with Oscars death… from the bio on his Tumblr page

“While he is an extremely talented young man, he does not forget where he comes from and gives back to his community the best he knows how.  In 2006, he received the Youth of the Year Award from the Boys and Girls Club of America, Venice, for his outstanding leadership skills.  He has since gone back to work at the Boys and Girls Club as the Teen Assist Coordinator/Audio Engineer Programer, Teaching & empowering youth through music.”

6:47 a.m. Just talked to the Watch Commander. Still no word on suspects other than 4 male blacks in an older model white Honda.

UPDATE: Victim was approximately 23 yrs old, name of Oscar Duncan. Worked at boys/girls club on Lincoln and did church outreach in Compton. Heunfortunately did not survive his gunshot wounds. Pronounced dead upon arrival to the hospital. No word on suspects.

Twitter is lighting up as people who knew Oscar Duncan respond to his unfortunate death. He belived in God, was vocal about the church and not being in gangs. Many are commenting about his leadership. A life taken too soon. His twitter account was @jusoscarduncan

At 10:30 calls came out for a shooting at the 600 block of Santa Clara. The report was for one shot fired, male victim down on the ground. Many units responded and an LAPD airship was called, but they were tied up elsewhere. Witnesses at the scene reported a white vehicle speeding away from the scene. Initial reports were the vehicle contained 4 male black gang members. Later witnesses said they did not see the occupants of the vehicle, described as an older model white Honda. When I arrived at the scene a witness who had rendered aid to the victim said he was shot in the head. Radio calls from initial police at the scene had him shot in the chest, and unresponsive, not breathing. The mother of the victim was at the scene and was going to follow along to the hospital. Comments at scene were that the victim was 20 years old, and was a good kid – may have worked at the boys/girls club and/or been involved in the church, but that the shooting was “most definitely gang related” based on the suspects actions.

  1. I met Oscar at church and he was a truly inspirational young man. He made me feel like family. He touched the lives of many youths throughout LA and while it seems inconceivable that he would fall from the very same thing he stood against, God had a plan for him. Those he impacted including myself should take this unfortunate event and speak to God to get an understanding as to what He wants us to get from this. Oscar helped to show us the way to be young, outgoing, and God fearing, now with his untimely death each one of us must continue down the trying road of goodness to seek justice for Oscar and righteousness in ourselves.

  2. Monique says:

I would say to his family that he is with God. Finally in a peaceful and safe place. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. My heart is broken. I hope the police could catch the ones who kill him very SOON.

  3. Monique says:

I have an idea. Since gang members like guns and to kill, send them all to Afghanistan. I bet they are going to beg for their lives.

    • Saemone says:

It wasnt someone in venice who did that to him…definitelty an outside gang. The ppl of venice are all close and if not family just like family.

  12. Saemone says:

I was born and raised with Oscar in these same streets of Venice. We grew up around the corner from each other and never in a million years did I think he would fall victim of the crimes he faught against. My prayers go out to his family which is family I share with him and all of the people who know him. He was a great soul and now I KNOW he’s singing and dancing with the angels in Heaven.

  13. I am incredibly sad for this great man and his family. My wishes and thoughts are going out to them tonight. It is difficult to understand why things like this happen, and why anyone would hurt someone like Oscar, but I will do my best to honor his memory by doing more to help others.

  14. Just have to say I am in shock. Today I received 5 grime & crime reports to clean up gang graffiti. We have tackled it as a huge issue for the past few weeks. It is as if something has been brewing… but this is our neighborhood. Now, a young man who worked with our youth at the Boys & Girls club – who did mentoring and church counseling in Compton has been shot dead on our streets. Don’t accept his death as just part of what happens in our neighborhood. Please. Stand against this, and do something.
