Cell Phone Thefts on the Rise in Venice Beach

From NBCLA

The LAPD is warning people about a rash of thefts and robberies in the Venice Beach area.

Police issued a community alert that says suspects are targeting pedestrians carrying electronic devices such as iPhones and iPods.

“We had three last week, two specific to the Venice Beach area and one just east of there, that involved two iPods and an iPhone,” LAPD Captain Jon Peters said.

The alert recommends people avoid walking around while using their electronic devices. Police also remind pedestrians to stay aware of their surroundings.

The Venice Beach warning follows an announcement by the nation’s major wireless carriers to build a stolen phone database, which would allow the carriers to block service to a phone if stolen.

“I think it’s going to make a huge difference,” Peters said.
