Vending and Park Closure Signs Are Up - First Step To Enforcement On Way

The new 42.15 and 63.44 vending and park closure signs started going up yesterday. At last nights CPAB meeting Victor from Rec & Parks informed attendees that the project of getting the signs up along Ocean Front Walk will be completed this week.

There will not be an anvil of enforcement dropping however… We have been told that LAPD and other City agencies will begin informing vendors and the homeless of the rule changes by walking the beat, handing out flyers and engaging in other outreach opportunities. They want to make a complete effort in making sure everyone is informed before enforcing these new ordinances so people have a full opportunity to plan to comply.

Vendors will be notified of what will not be permitted and clergy council and homeless outreach will be on hand to encourage the homeless to go to shelters and transition into housing. These efforts will continue through the end of January.

I have lived in the same place in Venice for 10 years, between OFW & Pacific, and tonight was the first night that I accidentally tripped over a guy sleeping in my private walkway. I 100% agree with what city council is doing to protect us, and usually support them wholeheartedly. I also hope that this experience tonight was not a direct result of the new ordinance. But I honestly cannot help but to question it.

As a resident, this is far too long in coming. I am thrilled that the city is going to help the tent city residents find help from shelters, etc. As a Vendor of Dance (Hula) Hoops on OFW, I will be put out of business. Will the LAPD help me find a new home for my business?

It is to the credit of so many fellow Venetians that I have been able to bring a little laughter and joy out there. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Now, due to the secondary use or utility of the hoop, I could potentially face jail time.

    Absurd, don’t you think?

So your business was based on having a completely free place to set up and sell things? How about finding a place to operate your shop out of like most traditional businesses? Not too absurd of an idea.

      • Eclecticjen says:

Livia- have you ever started a traditional business in a niche market without incurring massive debt, receiving substantial startup funding or selling drugs? I have. Doing so while affording sky high rent in Venice? No shop rental overhead and 16 million visitors per year since 2010 sure have helped. My hand made hoops have also participated in every Venice Art Crawl and been featured at the Downtown Art Walk, the Brewery Art Walk and various art galleries and events. The events plus online sales are not expected to make up for ofw income lost. I am very happy for my comrades who paint, sculpt and photograph in that they get to stay and won’t be expected to open their own galleries to make a living.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you LAPD. Thank you.

Thank GOD. I can’t wait. I am fine with the cops taking their time as long as we know it is coming. Lord knows the disgusting rats that populate the boardwalk look for any reason to sue. Got an email from the Neighborhood Council about a meeting on the boardwalk being closed. Day late and a dollar short as usual. Useless boobs.

    • Jeffrey says:

These “disgusting rats” were probably there long before you were born, and will continue to be there long after you’re gone. If you don’t like the neighborhood, don’t move into it.
