Echo Park, Glendale and Baldwin Hills have done it, but will Venice residents be able to organize and stop the giant T-Mobile cell phone tower slated to go on the roof at 4000 Pacific Ave on the Marina Peninsula? A large group of local neighbors are against the planned tower, and are ready to put up a fight but more voices are needed.
Part of the challenge in our tourist area is that many property owners are “absent”, living in other areas and just owning property here… and their renters often are not as vested in community issues. The City distributed a notice in the surrounding community along the Peninsula regarding a February 2nd hearing at 9 a.m. at the West LA Municipal Building regarding the issue. [See notice here]
Below is additional information distributed by local residents. If you want to fight the cell tower mark the date and show up to oppose and be heard!
- Hearing: Office of Zoning Administration Case no: ZA 2011-2951(CUW)
- Thursday Feb 2nd
- West Los Angeles Municipal Building
- Second Floor Hearing Room
- 1645 Corinth Ave
- Los Angeles, Ca 90025
- Staff contact: Daniel Gornitsky (213) 978-1341
From neighbors:
Attached you will find a notice from the city regarding a meeting on February 2 in connection with T-Mobile getting permitted to build a HUGE cell and GPS tower on the roof at 4000 Pacific Avenue.
While the science about health risks connected with proximity to cell towers is controversial, I for one tend to err on the side of caution and personally have no desire to be exposed to constant high levels of radio waves and electromagnetic radiation. Aside from the potential long term effects, people in close proximity to cell towers report nausea, dizziness, buzzing in the ears, headaches, head pressure, difficulty sleeping, brain fog, skin rash, burning sensation in the skin, and a metallic taste in the mouth as some of the symptoms.
Here are some articles concerning reported physical effects and studies on health risks associated with living near cell towers:

Unfortunately, since the FCC considers cell towers “safe”, objecting to the tower on the basis of health risks is a complete non-starter.

It is somewhat heartening that aesthetics and character of the neighborhood are useful objections because the thought of this hideous eyesore in our beautiful neighborhood is abhorrent.
While the city notice claims there is no environmental impact, I see that in the past proximity to protected wetland has been cause to stop installation, once even right here on the tidal canal. There is data that they affect birds and bees.

Does anyone have any connection with the Coastal Law Enforcement Action Network that sued to stop the project at Jib? Does anyone have a connection with someone at the Marina Peninsula Neighborhood Association?
Several neighborhoods have been able to block them.

If anyone has any ideas as to how we get the neighborhood (the map shows the radius) involved in blocking the construction of this tower in this location or get the building owners to reconsider, please weigh in. Also please alert friends living inside the affected zone here on the peninsula. I am planning to try to get Venice 311 and Yo Venice to help make people aware of the impending project.
