Suicidal Man Engages 2 Hour Standoff With LAPD On 800 Block Of Rose

At 9 p.m. on Thursday several panicked phone calls came into LAPD about a man running in traffic after cars on the 800 block of Rose Ave. First reports said he might have a gun, a wrench, or a baseball bat. LAPD arrived on scene shortly to find a white male, frantically pacing in and out of his house, chain smoking and carrying a machete.

Officers surrounded the house and an airship was positioned overhead locking the suspect in the perimeter of his home. He was shouting on the phone and to LAPD police officers, and indicated that he had additional weapons. Officers were poised and ready to disarm the suspect with a beanbag rifle or taser, whichever was safer and more suitable given his position. The suspects family members tried to communicate with him via cell phone but he would not comply.

After two hours and a lot of patience on behalf of LAPD who continually re-assessed the situation to ensure the safest outcome, the suspect put down his weapon and walked out of his home, surrendering to officers. He was taken into custody and will be taken for a mental health evaluation. Two machetes and a pellet rifle were retrieved at the scene.

A question that was asked during the twitter exchange during the incident was, ” How much did this cost us? “, which is a great question and is often asked after major incidents like this. The answer is $0 . All of the officers and resources that were used during the incident were already on duty, and ready to handle situations such as this. Yay!
