Suspected Burglar In Custody After 4 Hour LAPD Perimeter At Speedway and Washington

Suspect caught on camera. You can see water on the ground. Suspect tried to get into yard and neighbor sprayed him with hose and he ran.

So today just past noon, LAPD observed a male black in a yard at 20th and Speedway and when they addressed the individual, the person took off running. The suspect led officers on a foot pursuit south down speedway, when the suspect took off down 29th Ave and disappeared. Officers in the foot pursuit already had summoned an airship, backup and a perimeter was set and locked down right away.

Officers commenced doing a field search, when a resident alerted them that they had video footage of the suspect from multiple angles. Photos were obtained and distributed to the officers, detectives and command staff… and K-9 units were called in to do a search. After locking down the area, clearing all pedestrians and making announcements… K-9′s began a search…and the suspect was finally located hiding in a garbage can near an apartment building.

The suspect ran from officers, hid, evaded messages to come out, and is suspected in burglary or attempted burglary. At first it was thought there were two suspects, but there was only one. Long day and a careful search in a VERY busy beach area on a sunny day. LAPD got the bad guy as referenced by the photo below! BYE BAD GUY!

Oh SNAP! LAPD found the suspect hiding in a garbage can in an adjacent property.

I was riding my bike by when all the excitement started. I stayed for the whole show. I could hear the police car broadcasts from the officers in the alley. I didn’t really understand what goes into that kind of showdown when they are looking for someone. Have to say it was very impressive. Venice 311 is that what you hear?

Yep, that is what we hear. Part of the reason we decided to do Venice311 and twitter the police calls was because people really don’t have any idea how much police officers have to go through just to keep our streets safe. No, they aren’t perfect all of the time… but I am so continually disheartened at how snide and disrespectful people are. And everyone seems to be an expert at police work, which is amazing to me.

Today during the search for the suspect, one neighbor told the officers she thought it was totally ridiculous that one of the officers had riot gear and a rifle. They tried to explain to her he was with a K-9 unit, and he was armed in the event that they had a violent confrontation with the suspect who is clearly evading law enforcement and does not want to be apprehended. She thought it was stupid, and she said as much. I just don’t get it.
