Today a man in a silver minivan barricaded himself in his vehicle at 23rd and Ocean Front Walk, with religious statements scrawled on his car, including the statement ” I was shot by LAPD for preaching gods word. I want my $$$ “. The radio call came out that the man had committed assault. It was also reported that he was 300 lbs., was reported as a missing person and was 5150. It was also alleged that he had a knife and had threatened a lifeguard. The lifeguard approached him. He tried to drive his car on the sand. He was stopped. He got out of his car and started drawing on it with a marker, and wiping grease on his body. LAPD was called, they ran his plate and it came back that the man was critically missing from Washington.
Although the man’s car was surrounded, he started his car and bolted away from officers after ramming a police car. He was immediately pursued by six patrol cars. During his attempted escape down Venice Blvd. he blew a tire. He continued down Venice, turned on Lincoln, got on the 90 Freeway and turned off at Slauson when he was stopped by a spike strip and the high speed chase ended after two pit maneuvers.
After being surrounded for about a half an hour, he finally exited his vehicle and was taken into custody.
Venice 311 drove Tony Vera to the final scene where he got all the video including an interview with Captain Peters about the incident. Captain Peters explains the entire incident in detail. LAPD did an incredible job of getting this man safely to a hospital for treatment.
