Feb 17th, 2011

Noe Rodriguez, wanted for the murder of a 50 yr. old homeless man in Venice was arrested in Calexico crossing the border from Mexico to the United States. It was rumored that he had fled to Mexico and he has been at large for over two years. He is being held at the North County Correctional Facility in Castaic. His court date is March 1st, 2011 in LA Superior Court.
A local Venice Boardwalk icon called us today, as he was witness to some of the events of this crime and was the one who called LAPD. He was in his home by Lincoln Fabrics and heard the gunshot when the murder occurred. He looked out his window and saw a group of homeless men around a mattress where they normally slept. One person was on a bicycle. It seemed that they were arguing and he went downstairs and the guy on the bike fled the scene. He realized that the man on the mattress had been shot, and immediately called LAPD and got in his truck and went looking for the guy on the bike thinking he was the shooter. He saw him by the 7-11 on Lincoln and took his photo. He called the police and spent the next two days working with LAPD to find and identify the man on the bike, who was a transient. He was not the shooter, but he was able to I.D. the shooter as Noe Rodriguez.
As evidenced by this story, working together and calling LAPD with eye witness accounts to anything that you might see that seems strange may be information that can lead to solving a crime. It was a brave move for the witness to approach the group outside his home although he was familiar with them, and equally brave for him to follow in his vehicle right away to locate the man who fled the scene.
It may take time, but Mr. Rodriguez is now behind bars and will face the court system to stand accountable for the crime he committed here in Venice.
