[LAPD Audio] UPDATE: Gunshots & A Stolen Car And A Gang Shooting Last Night

20120619-080456.jpg
UPDATE: LAPD is connecting all the information from the shots fired in Oakwood, to the following of the stolen car and suspects bailing out, and the gun recovered this morning. No confirmed answers yet details are being processed.  As for the shooting on Braddock, all victims survived their wounds. No suspects in custody.

Below is the audio from the whole incident from shots fired in Oakwood, to the pursuit and perimeter, suspects being taken into custody and the gun found this morning. I usually edit down the auido – but I just wanted to let people hear the whole thing to reflect how valuable the LAPD airships are. Without them, they would have not been able to set up an adequate perimeter, they would not have found the suspects hiding using the FLIR infrared camera and they would not have been able to stage officers in a manner that protected everyone’s safety. They are loud, and they wake you up… but they also capture people driving around shooting in your neighborhood in stolen cars at 1 a.m.

Check this out on Chirbit

Last night just before 1 a.m. a report of six shots were fired near 6th and San Miguel. Shortly thereafter LAPD ran the plate of a white truck that came back as a stolen car from outside our area. A short pursuit ensued and three Hispanic males in their late teens and one Hispanic female bailed out of the car just East of Main St and Ocean Park in Santa Monica. An airship was on scene immediately, set up a perimeter and two of the four were caught. Nice of them to come to Venice for a joyride. It was not confirmed if the two incidents were related. A gun was found in the bushes of an apartment building this morning along Electric Ave. LAPD retrieved it.

An hour later there was a gang shooting on Braddock. 2 Male Hispanics and one female Hispanic shot two victims who were taken in critical condition to a nearby trauma center. One victim had multiple gunshots to the chest.

Murder, Forcible Rape Punctuate Rising Crime Trend

For the past three weeks, local crime statistics reflected a rise in violent crime, and a slight dip in property crimes. Assault and armed robberies ( theft of cell phones increasing all over the city ) have been on the rise, but today on the outskirts of Venice there was a murder, and forcible rape reflecting a serious shift in violent attacks.

At around 8 a.m. a radio call came out about a person, covered in blood outside of a medical office on Venice Blvd. The call initially indicated that the person may have been shot elsewhere. The victim, Robert Rainey, was beaten to death in his chiropractic office at the 9200 block of Venice.

At approximately 5 p.m. a victim reported that a white male, 6 ft tall, brown hair, brown eyes, forced his way into an apartment and executed a rape by bodily force ( no weapons ), and fled in a Silver late model Nissan Z 2 door in an unknown direction. This happened at the 12500 block of Culver Blvd, just two blocks away from the Pacific Division police station.

Just prior to the sexaul attack call, a female transient beat holes in an apartment door at the 500 block of North Venice Blvd. Her face was bloody, and she was reported to be under the influence of narcotics.

The community is encouraged to pay attention to your surroundings. Make note of unusual vehicles and license plates in your neighborhood. Don’t walk distracted by a cell phone, and use caution and awareness when entering/exiting your car and home. For more information on local crime check the stats at the LA Times crime page.

Skid Rose Bumopolis Now Located On Ozone

Tonight just after 11 p.m. Ozone between Speedway and Ocean Front Walk became the new transient resting spot in Venice, with another encampment at the empty lot at Ozone and Pacific. A rough count put more than 45 sleeping along the stretch, with accompanying pets and piles of debris. A number of calls were generated about fights and noise. Here we go again, again.

Venice Random Piano At 19th and Ocean Front Walk

20120416-210735.jpg
Was walking the dogs, and saw a piano. Not that seeing a large piece of random anything along the boardwalk is a surprise… but I read about the random piano project earlier and was happy that Venice was a recipient!

Our piano art project piece is at 19th and Ocean Front Walk. Play on…

From the LA Weekly
“Launched on April 12 after more than a year of preparation, the pianos are all over the city, including L.A. Live, UCLA, USC, the Santa Monica Pier and Union Station. The goal is simple: to bring people together by creating the opportunity for spontaneous music-playing. The pianos are available 24 hours a day for the next three weeks, and anyone is invited to play.

The program, sponsored by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, features pianos donated mostly by the Hollywood Piano Company. The uprights are decorated by local artists and community organizations, turning the pianos into works of art ranging from Chinatown’s colorful dragon (perhaps a bit too on the nose?) to an evening skyline at Plaza de La Raza in Lincoln Heights. Each piano comes with a protective plastic cover in case of rain.

Once the program ends, the pianos move on to schools and community groups, or are auctioned off. While New York and other cities have had more pianos, Los Angeles’ pianos have a wider gamut of community involvement, from local artists like Frank Cubillos to organizations such as the Braille Institute of America and Homeboy Industries.”

“Skid Rose” Lawsuit Filed Over Homeless Belongings In Venice Beach

From The San Francisco Chronicle

By Christina Hoag

(03-30) 16:54 PDT Los Angeles, CA (AP) –

The city of Los Angeles faces its fifth lawsuit in two decades over the seizure of homeless people’s belongings in street cleaning sweeps after recent crackdowns in the beachfront community of Venice.

Santa Monica civil rights attorney Carol Sobel filed a legal claim against the city Thursday after successfully suing the city in the last three cases over the same issue in Skid Row, the most densely populated homeless area in Los Angeles.

Sobel said she is seeking $4,000 in damages each for 11 people who lost possessions including medicine, wallets with cash, and legal and personal documents in a March 7 sweep.

“It’s just extremely disappointing that this city won’t take a different approach to poor people who don’t have a place to live,” she said.

A spokesman for the city attorney’s office did not return a phone call for comment Friday, but the city has defended its right to keep streets clean, saying bulky items on sidewalks violate local ordinances and cause blight and hazards to health and safety.

The latest case is the first contesting street cleanups outside Skid Row in another area of Los Angeles that is a hub for transients, especially young drifters.

The spate of sweeps started several months ago after the city imposed a nighttime curfew in the Venice beach area. That caused homeless people to decamp to sidewalks, and local residents to lodge numerous complaints about drug use and hygiene issues. The city has responded with a crackdown.

Homeless activist David Busch said his cart of worldly possessions, including a laptop computer, was taken in the March 7 sweep, but he managed to get the items back from a public works yard. Many people, however, were not able to retrieve their items because they did not have bus fare or could not arrange a ride to the yard, Busch said, adding that about 65 people are sleeping on the sidewalk.

The issue came to a head Thursday, he said, when about 30 homeless people and activists stood guard over belongings while sanitation workers arrived with trucks to conduct another sidewalk sweep.

“We were standing there next to every homeless person’s property,” Busch said. “We had quite a dramarama.”

After City Councilman Bill Rosendahl intervened, the sanitation trucks left, Sobel said.

Rosendahl’s office said he could not comment because of the pending litigation.

Sobel noted that although the previous cases dealt specifically with Skid Row, they are based on federal law so they apply to the entire city. She said she plans to use the new case to obtain a citywide ban on homeless property seizures so it is clear to city officials.

The city is appealing a federal judge’s ruling last year in a Skid Row case that bars sanitation workers from picking up possessions from sidewalks without notice and without telling residents where they can reclaim their property.

In many cases, mentally ill people lost their worldly goods when they left their bundles unattended while they went to shower or eat at a nearby shelter.

The first case in Los Angeles over homeless property seizures was filed in 1987, which the city also lost. Los Angeles has the largest homeless population in the nation.

Merry Christmas Venice

Today the spirit of giving and Christmas was alive with so many kind Venetians who showed up with home cooked meals, and volunteers to help serve. Hundreds of thankful homeless ate bountiful plates of hot food and soup.

Special thanks to sendmeapenny.org who organized this event today and every weekend on the boardwalk. They are always accepting donations.

Merry Christmas Venice!
