UPDATE: The iditarod started with a police presence. A few got busted even before the event started for having illegal shopping carts strapped to the top of their vehicles, and having open containers.
The first stop was Baja Cantina, second stop Speedway and 18th. By that time police had stopped most with open containers and dumped the stash. Put on every year with teams of local college kids “competing” to get to the last stop first … each team has a shopping cart full of booze and they drink along the way wearing costumes. Unfortunately all the shopping carts are stolen, and discarded in Venice when they are done, with all their trash discarded along the way. Many tickets were issued today for this unpermitted event. As crazy and fun as it is, it just leaves a heap of trash and shopping carts in Venice.
The annual Venice ididarod is starting at 11:15 today at hurricane and speedway. This is the group that gets wasted and pushes everyone in shopping carts. First drinking stop is Baja Cantina and the cops are already at the scene. Expect arrests, especially of you participate. Last year revelers stole shopping carts and destroyed property.
