MAR VISTA, Calif. (KTLA) — An investigation is under way after a man allegedly taunted officers with a knife, prompting them to open fire during a traffic stop in Mar Vista.

The shooting was reported at around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday along Washington Place and Centinella Avenue.

Two LAPD officers stopped two suspects in vehicle for possible DUI when one man threatened officers with a knife, police said.

One officer opened fire, hitting the suspect in the abdomen.

Witness Alex Daskkalos said the suspect was told to drop the knife “over a hundred times.”

“He wasn’t dropping it. He told them to, like, drop their guns and said that he wasn’t afraid to die,” Daskkalos told KTLA.

The suspect was being treated at a local hospital and was expected to survive, officials said.

The second suspect was taken into custody without incident.

No other injuries were reported.

Washington Place and Centinella Avenue were expected to remain shut down for several hours during the investigation..
