Two Suicides, One Quite Grisly Grip Separate Communities In Pacific Division Sunday Night

Yesterday was a stressful day for LAPD as they spent several hours trying to locate a suicidal subject yesterday evening. Friends concerned for Woody Runner alerted LAPD that he was depressed and possibly suicidal. He was seen on surveillance video leaving the back entrance of his condo complex on Marina Pointe Dr around 6:30 p.m. Officers working on credible tips scoured several bars where Mr. Runner was reported to have been seen, but were unfortunately just a few minutes behind him. He was found deceased by his own hand in his condo complex. Mr. Runner was the CEO of a medical firm and was well known for his work and patient advocacy after his diagnosis with type-1 diabetes in his 50′s.

The second incident happened around 5 a.m. on Glendon & Charnock. Several callers alerted LAPD to the sound of shots fired in the area. Then a caller from the 3600 block of Glendon reported a 64 yr old male may have shot himself with a shotgun. When officers arrived they found the subject who had shot himself with the shotgun. The scene was reported as extremely grisly, with initial officers unable to recognize the age or sex of the victim due to the damage inflicted by the weapon. Streets were blocked off, and residents in the area reported the coroners van and seeing a lot of blood. :(

If you believe someone may be depressed or suicidal it never hurts to reach out and ask if they need help. Many resources are available, including many right here on the west side. Being ignored often propels people who are depressed further into despair. Reaching out with suicide prevention information can make all the difference. I am so sorry to hear about this suicide. Grew up with the Runners and his wife. You just can’t imagine why people like this are so depressed about. Seems as if he had everything. Prayers for the family and terribly saddened.
    Sincerely,

    Tammy Perris Winnell

Please all keep the family of Woody Runner in your thoughts and prayers. As anyone can imagine his family is devistated and in complete shock including his elderly mother and 4 three brothers.

I worked for two years on the Didi Hirsch crisis hotline. You can’t imagine a more dedicated and compassionate group of people who are working 24/7 to prevent suicides and aid the lonely and chronically mentally ill.

It is so unamiganable when people do not have any obvious clues. There may be some now in hindsight but at the time……
