Los Angeles Beaches Forever Oakwood/Venice Initiative

From a reader:

Hi Venice 311,

Los Angeles Beaches Forever is an initiative that will help Venice/Oakwood residents adapt to climate change, and make our beloved Venice Beach more sustainable and adaptable to the rising sea levels. The initiative has an incredible opportunity to win a $100,000 grant from the Goldhirsch Foundation LA2050 Challenge, which will have a huge positive impact on the lives of so many Venice residents – and we are asking for your votes!
With this grant, low-income Venice residents will receive much-needed tree coverage on their streets, reducing carbon from the air and slowing sea level rise nearby. They will also receive water barrels, cisterns, or rain gardens, to conserve water and reduce the risk of seawater intrusion into our underground water basin. This grant will be felt by Venice residents, as well as the 60 million tourists that visit Venice annually. With the help of your vote, we can adapt better to the climate change and sea-level rising that is already affecting our beaches (see photograph), but WE NEED YOUR HELP.

According to a recent study by USC, Venice is one of the most at risk communities as a result of sea level rise, due to the inability of low-income communities to adapt to climate change. Los Angeles Beaches Forever assists these residents by planting trees, replacing water-guzzling lawns with drought-tolerant California-friendly plants, and distributing rain barrels. These measures will not only greatly impact the air quality, and enable water conservation and flood prevention, but also increase community involvement, lower crime and provide jobs for our local youth.

Within the first year, Los Angeles Beaches aims to:
-Plant 300 trees, creating 75% tree coverage, absorbing 14,500 pounds of Carbon Dioxide and 450 Kg. of particulate matter a year, effectively slowing sea-water rise
-Replace 30 lawns, saving 780,000 gallons
-Install 50 Rain Barrels, saving 27,500 gallons and divert from storm drain system
-Venice crime rate down 20%
-25 people trained in environmental sustainability
