UPDATE to the UPDATE: Despite our initial report, the 13 on board the vessel that ran aground were NOT entitled teenagers, they just ACTED like entitled teenagers. One of the group sent me a message stating that they also had a U.S. Marine on board and the vessel was not over capacity. Don’t know the role of the U.S. Marine, or the point of being told that – but according to the Sheriff, the majority had musical instruments and it was unclear who was in charge of and responsible for that pesky “sailing” part of the boat while the large group was apparently out at night, for some kind of birthday party. Nobody likes to be responsible when things go wrong… stemming from not being responsible in the first place… but hey… nobody got hurt, right? While for some, that fact might make it all o.k. but the Sheriff is investigating the incident. Dropping your cell phone and cracking the screen is an “accident”. Navigating a boat with 13 people on it aground requiring the response of 4 agencies is looked at similarly to driving a bus with 13 people on it across an embankment and crashing. If nobody gets hurt, someone was still driving recklessly with the exception of having a medical emergency behind the wheel.
Word from people at scene was that it was loaded with entitled, a-hole teenagers who were jerks to first responders. That always helps when you have overloaded your watercraft and cause a maritime disaster.
Around 9 p.m. Friday night a 30 ft sailboat ran aground just north of the Marina Del Rey jetty with 13 people aboard. There were no injuries, but onlookers speculated that the boat may have been over capacity. Initial reports said there were subjects in the water. LA County Fire, Marina Del Rey Sheriffs and LAPD all responded to the incident. Not sure if the boat was secured by a Sheriffs boat, or if it is continuing to drift ashore. More info when we get it!
