Around 8 p.m. LAPD Pacific Division officers were doing surveillance on 2 men and a female that were going in and out of a vehicle on Main and Market that was wanted in an armed carjacking out of Hollywood. The suspects were removing items from the car, and making many trips back and forth to the vehicle. LAPD called for an airship and asked it to hang out nearby until they were ready to move in. Several people asked why the airship was hovering over by Beethoven… and that is why. One of our officers heard the suspects say they needed a jump, as the battery was dead in the car. Fearing that the suspects may carjack another car, Hollywood detectives instructed them to take the suspects into custody as a matter of public safety. LAPD Pacific moved in and the suspects ran. One male was detained at the car, the female was detained a block away, and one male huffed it down Market and over a fence. A perimeter was set up quickly as many officers had already surrounded the area doing the surveillance. The airship moved in and finally saw a heat signal under a tarp from their on board FLIR camera. An additional unit was requested so there would be no break in the perimeter, and sure enough the suspect was trying to hide under debris in a parking lot.
The male who fled matches the description of the man who carjacked the vehicle at gunpoint. Our fabulous Sgt. Skinner directed the operation and everyone was safely taken into custody! BAM!
