Pacific Ave Street Markers More Bike Friendly, Sentiment Does Not Necessarily Translate To Motorists

IMG_8744

Rejoice! The already clogged Pacific Ave…raceway for LAPD Pursuit drivers, people who like to do 3-point U-Turns in heavy traffic, ignorers of crosswalk markers now have new, bold, bright visual markers reminding you to share the road with all the bicyclists that totally disobey all the traffic laws that they are supposed to obey. Enjoy the free-for-all! Street Maintenance hopes to be done today, but they are putting in more around Venice…. share the road!

The simple fact is that as cycling becomes more popular and mainstream, both drivers and riders have to change. I ride about 10-20 miles every couple of days in Venice and the surrounding area. The majority of cyclists I see bombing through lights and signs, hopping through lanes, etc., aren’t kids. They are older guys like myself, guys who have been riding for years and are used to doing things the same way. But there are too many bikes to pretend that we can do what we want. If cyclists want to be treated with respect, we have to obey the same traffic laws that the cars do. I know that will piss a lot of people off just to consider the idea, but it’s true. But that doesn’t excuse the drivers. Sharrows like the ones on Pacific aren’t creating new laws. They’re just stating the obvious: drivers share the road with cyclists. It’s the law. But like others have said, a day doesn’t goes by when I don’t see drivers breaking the same traffic laws and treat me or other riders like they have no right to the tiny bit of crappy real estate to the right of the road (which is usually dangerously unmaintained, thanks to heavy bus traffic and general neglect) that we use to get around. I obey traffic laws and I am a happy guy by nature, but when I am honked at, sworn at, or cut off, sometimes more than once on a ride….well it makes it very hard to be a good citizen, that’s for sure.

What’s with the animosity towards cyclists?

    • No animosity at all, it is an absolute fact that the majority don’t obey any of the traffic laws especially stop signs in our little beach community…and it is really dangerous.

      • Stefan Wrobel says:

Dangerous for whom? Bikers, I assume, since a bike is not going to significantly damage a car, much less its passengers. I find it ironic that you’re advocating biker safety on one hand, but not measures that will add to their safety.

  3. I do everything possible to not drive my car down Pacific, no way would I ride my bike there.

I obey all the rules of the road, and bike lanes are need to keep separate the cars from the bikes. 4000lbs vs flesh and blood is no contest. Usually the younger or uninformed riders will blow stop signs. A couple of tickets will cure that; ) Every time I ride I see drivers being stupid, illegal U turns, blow stop and lights, accelerate as the pass bikers, cut off within feet, honk. Oh yeah I live in Hollywood, not rider friendly. I am happy to see bicycle lanes on the mean streets.
