Overview: L.A. Love & Leashes
Created by the non-profit Friends of L.A. Animal Shelters, L.A. Love & Leashes is the first pet store
that is 100% dedicated to animals from Los Angeles’ six city animal shelters. Located in the
Westside Pavilion, L.A. Love & Leashes is a high traffic adoption and education venue reaching
large numbers of people who would not otherwise visit our city shelters. L.A. Love & Leashes is
funded by donations and the sale of pet-related merchandise.
A Creative, Humane Alternative to Traditional Pet Stores. L.A. Love & Leashes offers an
alternative to traditional pet stores that buy and sell companion animals for profit. Dogs and
cats are transported daily from our city shelters to L.A. Love & Leashes for adoption. Beyond
adoptions, the store offers a range of animal-related retail items, with the dual aim of creating a
true alternative, humane “pet store” model and offsetting the costs of the store.
High Visibility Location on the Westside of L.A. Located in the Westside Pavilion mall
(annual visitors: 8 million), L.A. Love & Leashes is on the first floor, across from Victoria’s
Secret and close to Nordstrom’s.
300+ Lives Saved. Since our grand opening on January 21, 2012, and including a pop-up
adoption drive over the holidays, 300+ dogs and cats have been adopted from L.A. Love &
Leashes.
Changing Perceptions about “Shelter Pets.” Through interaction with the amazing dogs and
cats we’re privileged to have daily at L.A. Love & Leashes, as well as through conversations
with our staff and volunteers, we are able to change public perceptions and stereotypes about
the animals waiting for homes in our city shelters.
100% Animal Welfare Focus. The fundamental focus of L.A. Love & Leashes is to help our city
shelters save lives by increasing adoptions. All adoption fees go straight to the city shelter.
Merchandise sales, together with donations, support the store.
“Mutts” and Seniors. In contrast with traditional pet stores, L.A. Love & Leashes does not
focus on breed or age. Most of the dogs the shelter chooses for the store are “mutts” – all
beautiful. Also, we have successfully placed a number of senior dogs and cats.
